Distribution Operations Intern

May - August 2022 • Memphis, TN

What I liked

The culture was really one of a kind. They were there for you no matter what the issue was. Some companies treat interns like errand-runners, or someone to do inessential work. TJX gave you meaningful work and projects. Some tasks may seem tedious, but they were for a reason with the end goal to add value to the business. You will also receive a lot of opportunities to meet and talk with executive leadership in all areas of the business.

What I wish was different

I wish there had a been a more defined company wide intern schedule. I also wish there were times to only meet with other interns. There were the resources to do so, but I wish there was time in the schedule set aside to network with other interns outside of an executive leadership seminar. I also wish there was an opportunity for all the interns to meet in person together, or at least meet the interns near you geographically.

Advice

This is a hard internship to acquire. This is a very competitive field to enter into as well. Progress may not seem as defined as you are used to. The experience from tracking progress in school is defined by your grades. The progress in this experience will look different for you than the intern next to you. Compare yourself to the person in the mirror, not the person next to you. If you know more about this industry by the time you leave the internship, that’s expected. If you have a growing passion to learn more about the field you’re currently in by the conclusion of the internship , or learn and decide that you want to study or pursue something else; that’s progress.

Distribution Operations Intern

May - August 2021 • Phoenix, AZ

What I liked

The pay and other interns

What I wish was different

I wish there had been more structure

Advice

If you're looking into Operations Opportunities, know that this is basically an assistant manager job for their distribution center working Monday through Thursday, from either 2am-1:30pm or 1pm-1:30am. They expect you to show up early, and stay late with no overtime pay because it's not in budget.

Very face paced and helped me gain experience with customer service and getting better with transactions and sales.

What I wish was different

Communication among coworkers and management was a mess so more clear instructions from both parties can make this workplace more efficient

Advice

Patience is the key with any job, especially jobs that are customer service driven where one has to deal with all kinds of people. If you are able to interact with a variety of different people, then that is definitely a valuable asset for any future endeavor

Retail Salesperson

June 2018 - August 2019 • Paramus, NJ

What I liked

The other staff were extremely friendly and all treated me like family.

What I wish was different

I wish there were more associates to work to carry furniture. We would always struggle carrying items from the floor to outside and scramble to fill positions if someone was not able to make it to work. I would say we were extremely understaffed.

Advice

Remember to speak your mind and advocate for yourself. If you take on too much work that you know you can't handle, you will burn yourself out. Also, wear comfortable shoes. Walking around all day in cushion-less shoes is horrible.

Cashier

May - August 2019 • Nashville, TN

What I liked

I loved the environment of the workplace. The workers treat each other so kindly as if we are one big family. It doesn’t matter what you’re assigned, because everyone helps everyone.

What I wish was different

I wish we had a little less people just so that some people could get more hours. It’s so many people so hours have to be spread out.

Advice

One piece of advice I would like to share is to just be a hard working person.
