Economics analyst intern ERS (Virtual)

Job Description:

* Review historical estate tax law (from 1996) to identify relevant provisions to be used in estate tax estimates.
* Examine the current estate tax forecast model (coded in Stata) to identify elements of the model that would need to be altered to produce historical estimates and begin implementing some of these changes. 
* Begin working with project managers on developing a technical bulletin and/or peer-reviewed journal article highlighting the effect of policy changes on estate tax liabiity for farm households.

 

Duties include: 

* The intern would be tasked with reviewing historical estate tax law (from 1996) to identify relevant provisions to be used in the estate tax estimates.
* The intern would also be tasked with examining the current estate tax forecast model (coded in Stata) to identify elements of the model that would need to be altered to produce historical estimates and begin implementing some of these changes. 
* It is possible that the intern would coauthor a technical bulletin that describes the data development process and a journal article highlighting the effect of policy changes on estate tax liability for farm households. It is worth noting that we do not expect either publication to be finished by the end of the session. The intern’s efforts will constitute important first steps in laying the groundwork for this project.

Economics, ag economics, statistics

  

Education Level: 

· Graduate students 

  

Desired Skills: 

Ability to program in Stata (or understand the code). 
- Ability to review and evaluate technical material as it relates to tax law (specific expertise in tax law is 
  not required, however). 
- Some experience in technical writing for the social sciences is desirable.

  

Supervision: 

· Interns will report to the RRED FEB

· Interns will receive guidance and feedback from supervisor daily, weekly, or as needed. 

· Interns formal evaluation are completed at the following segments of the internship session, Mid-term and Final Performance Evaluation. 

  

Conditions of Employment 

· Applicants must be legally authorized to work in the United States as a U.S. citizen or national, asylee, refugee, or lawful permanent resident. 

· Must be in good academic standing as defined by their academic institution.
